The support

Six ways I hold the space

Every birth is different, but the care underneath it is consistent.

Prenatal visits

Two unhurried visits in your home to explore your history, hopes, fears, and the practical logistics of the day.

Birth planning

A clear one-page plan built around your values, with realistic backups for the paths labor sometimes takes.

Continuous labor support

I join you when you want me and stay until your baby is born, no shift changes, no leaving early.

Comfort measures

Counter-pressure, rebozo work, breath and movement, hydrotherapy, and position changes that help labor progress.

Partner support

I coach your partner in real time so they can be present and useful instead of anxious on the sidelines.

Immediate postpartum

Skin-to-skin, first latch, gentle photos, and quiet care in the golden hour after birth.

Doula vs. midwife

A birth doula and a midwife are not the same

Many families use the words interchangeably. Both belong on your birth team, but they provide different types of care.

Birth Doula

Supports the person

Continuous emotional, physical, and informational support through pregnancy, labor, and the early weeks.

What they do

  • Position changes and movement
  • Massage and counterpressure
  • Breathing and relaxation techniques
  • Encouragement and reassurance
  • Emotional support for your partner
  • Helps you know what to ask your medical team
  • Continuous presence throughout labor
  • Advocacy prenatally and in labor
  • Fills education gaps: prenatal, labor, newborn, postpartum

What they don't

  • Diagnose conditions
  • Perform clinical assessments or vaginal exams
  • Monitor fetal heart tones
  • Prescribe medications
  • Deliver babies

Midwife

Clinically cares for parent and baby

A trained clinical maternity-care provider. Scope depends on credentials, practice setting, and state laws.

What they do

  • Prenatal examinations
  • Orders and interprets labs and ultrasounds
  • Monitors parent and baby's health
  • Assesses fetal growth and position
  • Monitors fetal heart tones
  • Performs vaginal examinations
  • Identifies complications, consults or transfers care
  • Attends and manages labor and birth
  • Delivers the baby
  • Manages certain complications and emergencies
  • Examines the newborn
  • Provides postpartum care

What they don't

  • Not always able to give uninterrupted, hands-on emotional support throughout labor

The simplest way to remember

The doula supports the person.

The midwife clinically cares for parent and baby.

You don't have to choose. Many families benefit from both, a midwife managing clinical care and a doula providing continuous support. Different roles, shared goal: helping families feel safe, informed, respected, and supported throughout birth.
